The 29th Annual Nathaniel Moss Reunion

The 29th annual Nathaniel Coleman and Hattie Jane (Lynch) Moss Reunion, held on Sunday, September 5, 2010 at Cedar Creek State Park, brought 138 family members together again to celebrate their heritage.

Wilbert Reed led the family in prayer seeking blessings for fellowship and food. Following the meal, Shelly Rose began the children’s games, and reunion president Daniel Moss called the business meeting to order.

Following a treasurer’s report and general announcements, the family discussed a picture project to commemorate next year’s 30th reunion. Daniel and Kelli Moss will accept photos from all of the previous reunions through June 2011 and will scan and provide them on CDs free of charge to the family at next year’s reunion. The family also received family updates from representatives of each of Nathaniel and Hattie’s children.

Many door prizes were awarded to those in attendance. Marlece Sprouse won and then donated back her winnings from the 50/50 drawing, and Donna Dobbins Engler won the family door prize – a wooden shelf handmade by family member Gail Whitesel and a small quilt – that was donated by descendants of Nellie Moss Skidmore. The family also purchased raffle tickets for crafts including a wooden rocking chair made by Ron Taylor and won by Bill Jones, and a basket made by Dawna Jones and won by Bobbi Moss. David and Malora Moss were newly elected as president and secretary/treasurer, respectively, and Shelly Rose was re-elected to organize and lead the children’s games for 2011.

The adult games were highlighted by a sponge throw for the men, won by Jonathan Moss, and a wooden spoon throw for the ladies, won by Loretta Moss. Terry Moss then teamed with brother Nathanil to win both the egg toss and the water balloon toss.

The 28th Annual Nathaniel Moss Reunion


The 28th annual Nathaniel Coleman and Hattie Jane (Lynch) Moss Reunion, held on Sunday, September 6, 2009 at Cedar Creek State Park, welcomed 160 family members including new babies and new attendees to celebrate their heritage.

Wilbert Reed led the family in prayer to note losses and thanksgiving for the past year, and to seek blessings for fellowship and food. Following the meal, Dawn and Matthew Kropp led the children’s games including a piñata, and reunion president Daniel Moss called the business meeting to order. Following a treasurer’s report and general announcements, those in attendance received family updates from representatives of each of Nathaniel and Hattie’s children. The family also awarded its annual Moss Family Scholarship to Kari Radcliffe, a 2009 graduate of Gilmer County High School currently pursuing general studies at Glenville State College.

Many door prizes were awarded to those in attendance. Dan Perin won the 50/50 drawing, and Farron Moss won the family door prize that was provided by descendants of Ruth (Moss) Reed. Daniel and Kelli Moss were re-elected as president and secretary/treasurer, respectively, and Shelly Rose was elected to organize and lead the children’s games for 2010.

The adult games were highlighted by two events introduced last year: a hammer throw for the men, and a skillet throw for the ladies. Returning champion Sarah Moss once again led the ladies’ field with an exceptional skillet toss to retain the title, while husband Jonathan pulled off a last minute upset to seize the men’s hammer throw title from his brother, 2008 winner Terry Moss.

The 27th Annual Nathaniel Moss Reunion

The 27th annual Nathaniel Coleman and Hattie Jane (Lynch) Moss Reunion, held on Sunday, August 31, 2008 at Cedar Creek State Park, brought 134 family members together again to celebrate their heritage.

Wilbert Reed led the family in prayer seeking blessings for fellowship and food. Following the meal, Carol Jarvis began the children’s games, and reunion president Daniel Moss called the business meeting to order. The family acknowledged and mourned the passing only days earlier of Rodney Moss, and many attended the visitation for Rodney immediately after the reunion. The family also acknowledged the passing of other relatives during the past year, and received family updates from representatives of each of Nathaniel and Hattie’s children.

Many door prizes were awarded to those in attendance. Cindy Wasil won the 50/50 drawing, and Diana Kazmierczak won the family door prize that was donated by descendants of Lee Moss. Daniel and Kelli Moss were re-elected as president and secretary/treasurer, respectively, and Matt and Dawn Kropp were newly elected to organize and lead the children’s games for 2009.

The adult games were highlighted by two new events in conjunction with this summer’s Olympic Games: a hammer throw for the men, and a skillet throw for the ladies. At left, Kenny Landis displays his impressive throwing style. However, Terry Moss won the men’s competition with an incredibly long throw, while Sarah Moss dominated the ladies’ competition with a record-“breaking” throw that sent skillet shards all over the field.

The 26th Reunion - September 2, 2007


The 26th annual Nathaniel Coleman and Hattie Jane (Lynch) Moss Reunion, held on Sunday, September 2, 2007 at Cedar Creek State Park, brought 158 family members together again to celebrate their heritage. Prior to the day’s festivities, a group family photo was taken, and prints of this picture will be available at the 2008 reunion.

Wilbert Reed led the family in prayer seeking blessings for fellowship and food, and all enjoyed a huge buffet of covered dishes and desserts. Following the meal, Carol Jarvis and Pam Tuley began the children’s games, and reunion president Daniel Moss called the business meeting to order.

Following a treasurer’s report and announcements about family cookbooks and other matters, the family awarded its first annual Moss Family Scholarship for family members entering or enrolled in college to Erin Nicole Scott. Erin is in her senior year in the education curriculum at Fairmont State College. Congratulations, Erin!

Family members also voted to renew contributions to the caretaking of Nathaniel’s burial site in the Karickhoff Cemetery and for Hattie’s burial site in the Upper Steer Run Cemetery.

Lisa Landis won the family door prize, a beautiful oak end table handcrafted by Gale Whitesel to provide on behalf of the family of Viola Whitesel. Several other door prizes were also awarded. Paul Moss then facilitated family updates from representatives of each of Nathaniel and Hattie’s children. The family also acknowledged and mourned the loss in 2007 of family matriarch Viola Whitesel, 96, the last living child of Nathaniel and Hattie.

Bobby Beall then led an auction of family foods, crafts, and other novelties, and family members reminisced and enjoyed games of water balloon and egg tosses and sack races.

2006 Nathaniel Coleman and Hattie Jane (Lynch) Moss Reunion




The 25th annual Nathaniel Coleman and Hattie Jane (Lynch) Moss reunion held on Sunday, September 3, 2006 at Cedar Creek State Park brought 140 family members together again to celebrate their heritage. We were delighted to welcome a number of new babies to the family as well as several first-time attendees.

Wilbert Reed provided a blessing for our meal, a buffet of wonderful covered dishes enjoyed by all. Following the meal, Linda Goodrich began the children’s games, and reunion president Daniel Moss called the meeting to order.

Following announcements about forthcoming improvements to the shelter area for 2007, the committee distributed applications for awarding an annual Nathaniel Moss scholarship allowance for eligible family members. Additional criteria were discussed and voted on by family members. The first scholarship will be awarded in May 2007 and also will be announced at next year’s reunion.

Family members also voted to renew contributions to the caretaking of Nathaniel’s burial site in the Karickhoff Cemetery and for Hattie’s burial site in the Upper Steer Run Cemetery.

Collene Powers won the family door prize, a large custom made Amish basket provided by descendants of Leeman Moss. Other family members enjoyed smaller door prizes including mini-camcorders, canvas chairs, and a three-person tent. A prize was also awarded to Sierra Moss, the youngest in attendance at just seven weeks.

Paul Moss facilitated family updates from representatives of each of Nathaniel and Hattie’s children, including a report on the welfare of their last living child, Viola Whitesel, 96 of Grafton, OH as well as announcement of the newest descendant, Sydney Grace Sprouse of Elkins, WV, born just one day prior to the reunion. Daniel and Kelli Moss were re-elected as president and secretary/treasurer, respectively, and Pam Tuley and Carol Jarvis were elected to organize and run the children’s games for 2007. Bobby Beall then led an auction of family foods, crafts and other novelties, and family members reminisced and enjoyed games of water balloon and egg tosses as well as horseshoes.

Our 25th Anniversary!


The descendants of Nathaniel Coleman Moss and Hattie Jane (Lynch) Moss are invited to celebrate anew our common ancestry and each other by attending this year's 25th anniversary of our annual reunion. Please join the family beginning at 11 am on Sunday, September 3 in Shelter #1 at Cedar Creek State Park in West Virginia. Bring a covered dish to share (and an item for the auction, if you wish) to celebrate our heritage with food, fun and fellowship. ~ Friends and Family Reminisce

The 24th annual Nathaniel Coleman and Hattie (Lynch) Moss reunion held on Sunday, September 4, 2005 at Cedar Creek State Park brought 146 family members together again to celebrate their heritage.

At 12:20 pm Wilbert Reed gave the blessing for the meal, a covered dish dinner enjoyed by all. Following the meal, Shelly Rose began the children’s games, and reunion president Daniel Moss called the meeting to order. Family members agreed once again to contribute money for caretaking of Nathaniel’s burial site in the Karickhoff Cemetery and for Hattie’s burial site in the Upper Steer Run Cemetery. A scholarship program for family members entering college was also suggested and approved by those in attendance. Official applications will be created and made available at next year’s reunion.

Pam Tuley won the door prize, an afghan knitted and donated by Kelli Moss.
